BOXING

Boxing is the crowned king of combat disciplines around the globe. A typical match in the sport is played between two trained combatants who fight each other within a ring over several timed rounds. The winner is determined by the number of points they score or by knocking out their opponent. Although tracing its historical roots back to the Olympic Games in ancient Greece, boxing has not only withstood the test of time but has thrived as a popular sport with an ever-increasing global following.

History of Boxing

One of the earliest records of boxing dates back to Egypt, 3,000 BC. There is also evidence to support that boxing may have begun in ancient Greece. Wherever it started, there were no standard rules for boxing, so rounds would continue until one man lifted his finger to signal defeat or was unable to continue.

Leather thongs were used to bind fighters’ hands and forearms for protection. Though, this changed when the Romans developed a glove called cestus to replace these leather thongs. Cestus was a glove that had metal studs or spikes sewn into the leather. Many matches resulted in death due to these gloves.

Swords were a popular weapon of choice for many years, but as time went on and the use of swords became less common, boxing resurfaced in England in the late 1600s in the form of bare-knuckle boxing, also referred to as prizefighting. The first formal bare-knuckle match was documented in 1681, with the first English champion, James Figg, being crowned in 1719. Around the same time, the term ‘boxing’ became more and more popular.

Boxing still had no written rules at this point, with no weight divisions, round limits or referee, so it’s safe to say that matches were quite chaotic. The first set of rules were published in 1743 by Jack Broughton, a champion boxer. Broughton’s rules prohibited hitting a fighter when he’s down and hitting below the waist. The rules also encouraged the use of mufflers which were padded bandages/mittens. The London Prize Ring Rules emerged shortly after, prohibiting gouging, scratching, kicking, biting etc. The Marquess of Queensberry rules were then drafted in 1867 for amateur championships in different weight groups.

Although official rules were set, it was quite a struggle to get boxing recognised as a legitimate sport as it was outlawed in England and most of the US throughout the 19th century. This was until Tex Rickard, an influential promoter and champion John L. Sullivan, came along to aid in the fight — and the rest is history.

Boxing Events and Associations

The first step to becoming a boxing betting master is to know what championships to bet on. There are many exciting federations to choose from, so it may be hard to decide where to begin. So, we have compiled a list of popular boxing competitions to help get you started:

AIBA Boxing World Championship

The AIBA World Boxing Championship is one of the most elite competitions in boxing, alongside the Olympic boxing programme. It is organised by the International Boxing Association (AIBA), the sport’s governing body, which introduced the first championship in 1974 in Havana, Cuba. At the time, it was a men’s only event as the first women’s championships were held 27 years later, in 2001.

WBC

The World Boxing Council is one of the four oldest boxing associations in the world that sanction professional boxing. Many professional boxers have been recognised as WBC champions as this organisation has sanctioned high-profile bouts. With that said, the WBC recognises the calibre of the other three professional associations, including the WBA, IBF and WBO. There are nine regional governing bodies under the WBC, including the North American Boxing Federation (NABF), the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF), the EBU and the African Boxing Council (ABC).

WBA

The World Boxing Association (WBA), formerly known as the National Boxing Association, is also one of the four associations that sanction professional boxing matches. The WBA is a highly prestigious, top tier organisation, alongside the WBC, IBF and WBO. It was founded in the United States in 1921 by 13 state representatives, including the NBA. It is also recognised by the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF).

Olympics

Boxing was first introduced to the Summer Olympics in 1904 and has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games ever since — except for the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, as boxing was banned in Sweden at the time. Boxing was solely a men’s Olympic sport until the 2012 Summer Olympics, when women’s boxing was introduced to the program.

Boxing Betting Options

The next step to boxing betting is becoming familiar with your betting options. Not all sportsbooks offer the same knockout set of choices, but there are a few common wagers you’ll come across. Knowing what betting options you’ll have and how to place them is crucial in sports betting. After all, how would you know where to begin if you wouldn’t know what you’re placing?

Match and round bets are good wagers to start with as they are very common, easy to place and still hold excellent entertainment value. They are less risky than most boxing bets and do not require much market knowledge either, so these wagers are quite the all-rounder. If you would like to take things to the next level, future bets are a popular choice. They are similar to match bets, only you’d be betting on a whole tournament rather than a singular match. The over/under wager is worth considering as well if you’re testing out the betting waters.

Once you start to feel more confident in your betting, you can take a crack at more complex wagers. The more unlikely you are to hit a wager, the higher the payout will be if you do. This also means that the more unlikely you are to hit a wager, the more likely you are to not. So, always remember to bet responsibly.

Point spreads and handicaps are pretty good choices for those who enjoy that high-risk factor. Or, kick it up a notch by combining a few wagers with the parlay bet. You might find some sportsbooks offering the draw bet, but this is pretty rare since draws in boxing don’t happen very often. Still, placing a draw bet can be quite exciting.

Sports betting will undoubtedly keep your eyes glued to your screens, but while it is a thrilling experience, it can be easy to get lost in all these epic takedowns. That is why you need to make sure you know how to safeguard your funds. Having a good bankroll management strategy is an essential element in sports betting as it ensures that you’re always betting within your limits.
