What Are Esports?

Esports are video games played at a professional level in massive tournaments across the world. The industry reels in thousands of live spectators, millions of online viewers and billions in yearly revenue. For professional esports players, video games are not just a hobby or a pastime activity — they are their sport and their livelihood. Games like League of Legends (LoL), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), Defense of the Ancients 2 (DotA 2) and Rainbow Six Siege (R6) are some of the most competitive titles around, with the top teams vying for massive prize pools.

The popularity of these esports naturally led to the opening of betting markets in sportsbooks worldwide. At LV BET, you can bet on esports with odds as competitive as the games! We offer comprehensive markets on esports like LoL, CS:GO, DotA 2, Rainbow Six, Valorant, Overwatch, Warcraft III and King of Glory. How To Bet On Esports

Head to the ‘Esports’ section to explore ongoing events, pick the tournaments you’re interested in and browse through the open markets. Then, simply make your selections and submit the betslip — it’s as easy as that! Esports odds can be displayed in decimal or fractional format, depending on your site preferences.

What Are Esports?

Esports has gone through many milestones to get to where the industry is at today, and the future only looks brighter. From what started as a modest community to a now billion-dollar industry, esports has taken the world by storm and turned into an international sensation.

The first official video gaming tournament was held at Stanford University in 1972, inviting players to compete in a classic game called Spacewar. While this event only attracted students from the university, the Space Invaders Championship attracted over 10,000 players and firmly planted esports in the public eye by the time the ‘80s rolled around.

The ‘80s also saw the introduction of the Nintendo Entertainment System, which helped skyrocket the esports industry even more as graphics, controls, gameplay and accessibility got a whole new look. Competitive gaming took off as a result, as the Nintendo World Championships helped pave the way for even larger tournaments in the ‘90s. The internet boomed during this time which only made it easier for players to face off in the warzone against other players from all over the world.

Esports took another giant leap in the 2000s as the first League of Legends World Championship was held in 2011, featuring a huge prize pool of $100,000. This cash pot was a massive indicator of the growth of esports as a spectator sport, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. DotA 2’s first The International tournament, held the same year, featured an unprecedented prize pool of $1 million. The event was live streamed all over the globe, giving every player and fan a look into the thunderous rumble that the industry is bound to make.

With such increasing popularity, the International Olympic Committee recognised esports in 2017, opening up the possibility of esports becoming official Olympic sports. Esports is an industry that is not only packed with action, but is also not bound by creative restrictions or confined by age-old rulesets. Developers and publishers go out of their way to deliver the next big hit — another turn-of-the-decade boom is inevitable.

Now, if you’re new here, chances are that the Howling Abyss doesn’t ring any bells — don’t worry though, let’s break down some of the most popular esports games and how you can bet on them.

Esports Games

League of Legends (LoL)

League of Legends is an online multiplayer battle arena, developed and published by Riot Games. Inspired by the Defense of the Ancients mod in Warcraft III, there are multiple game modes available but the main LoL map is the Summoner’s Rift, where two teams of five players battle to defend their territory.

Each player controls their chosen ‘champion’ with a unique set of abilities. While there are many League of Legends characters to choose from, each champion is suited for specific roles on the Rift and so, deciding which champion to play with often depends on whether you want to attack, defend or support.

The aim is to gain control of your opponent’s side of the map, and you can do that by defeating other champions, destroying enemy strongholds and grabbing extra gold and buffs by bringing down jungle monsters. The team that manages to destroy the opponent’s Nexus — the structure in the centre of the enemy’s base — first wins the match. While the game offers some good entertainment, League of Legends is a highly tactical game and it is very interesting to see how each champion would hold off against others whilst battling it out on the Rift.

Defense of the Ancients 2 (DotA 2)

Similar to League of Legends, DotA 2 is a multiplayer game featuring a battle between two teams trying to gain control of their opponent’s side of the map — which would be either Radiant or Dire. DotA 2 was developed and published by Valve as a sequel to the Defense of the Ancients Warcraft III mod.

Defend your side of the map and defeat your opponents as you control one of the many powerful ‘heroes’ in the game. Each character has its own unique abilities and style of play — and understanding this will truly help you conquer the map. Push past enemy lines by defeating other heroes, gathering resources and taking objectives — the winning team is one that brings down the Ancient, a large structure at the core of the opponent’s base.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO)

Counter-Strike is a multiplayer first-person shooter, developed by Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment. Two teams are pitted against each other in different objective-based game modes which must be completed in order to win — all the while eliminating the opposing team. There are eight official game modes, including Casual and Competitive, all of which having distinct characteristics.

At the end of the round, players would be awarded in-game currency based on the team’s and each player’s performance. This can be spent in the game’s shop on utility equipment, firepower or other items that may be helpful in the following rounds.

Call of Duty (CoD)

Call of Duty is another massive first-person shooter series published by Activision. The franchise originally focused on the World War II setting, but gradually became more futuristic as you enter different worlds with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Enter and enjoy different objective-based combat modes like a 1v150 battle royale, a zombie apocalypse, Nuketown and others. In a competitive game mode, two teams compete against each other in a bid for objective control.

Rainbow Six

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege (R6) is also a tactical first-person shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. R6 puts a heavy emphasis on environmental destruction and team cooperation. Each member would be tasked with a specific objective, and assumes control of an attacker or a defender in different game modes. These modes can range from rescuing a hostage, defusing a bomb and so on. There are also a series of short offline missions called “situations” that can be played solo.

Esports Betting Options

When it comes to esports, the betting options differ slightly from sporting events like in tennis, basketball or MMA for example. In fact, the betting options available on esports betting events are actually quite vast and differ greatly across the different games — with perhaps the only common bet being the match winner.

First-person shooters generally offer handicap bets, totals and round/match winner betting choices — pretty standard for a sportsbook, and recommended for beginners. But it is in games like League of Legends and Defense of the Ancients 2 that things get really interesting. The betting options you’ll have available can be a little more complex, as you’ll find odds on a myriad of different markets specific to the game — like the First Blood bet in DotA 2 or the First to Take Baron Nashor in LoL. These sort of options are heavily reliant on your knowledge of the game, so this is truly where your gaming brain is put to work. It is worth putting in the time to research key players so that you’re equipped with a better gaming arsenal when placing your first esports bets.
