Golf Origins

Evidence suggests that golf originated from a game played in east Scotland, close to the royal capital of Edinburgh, where players were required to hit a pebble over sand dunes around tracks using a bent stick or club. Golf was such a raging success that even the royals began to pick up their own clubs, with King James IV of Scotland becoming the first golfing monarch in 1502. Golf gained the royal seal of approval, which propelled the game to new heights of popularity that swept across Europe in the 16th century.

Golf became an official sport in 1744 when the first golf club was formed, and an annual tournament was set up. The rules for the competition were drafted by Duncan Forbes, and silverware was used as prizes. In 1764, the first 18-hole course was constructed, which established the standards still in place today. In 1834, King William IV honoured the St Andrews club with the title ‘Royal and Ancient’, making it the world’s premier golf club.

Numerous golf clubs popped up outside Scotland after that, including London’s Royal Blackheath in 1766. Golf travelled outside Britain in 1820, when golf clubs emerged in India, followed by Ireland in 1856, South Africa in 1885, the United States in 1888 and Hong Kong in 1889.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) was established in 1894, and over 1,000 golf clubs emerged all around the US by the 1900s. Now, golf plays a major role in sports betting as one of the top sports in the world.

Golf Betting Events

One of the very first stepping stones of golf betting is becoming familiar with golf events. After all, how can you begin betting without knowing which events to bet on? To help get you started, we have compiled a list of some of the most popular golf events that you can find on our LV BET Sportsbook.

PGA Championship

The PGA Championship is one of the four major professional golf tournaments. It is organised by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and once served as the fourth and final tournament of the season, held in August. As of 2019, the competition is held in May, serving as the season’s second tournament. PGA Championship winners are automatically invited to play in the other three major golf tournaments, including the Masters Tournament, the US Open and the Open Championship. PGA champions are also invited to participate in the Players Championship for the next five years and are eligible to compete in the PGA Championship for life.

Ryder Cup

Named after the English businessman Samuel Ryder, the Ryder Cup is a biennial men’s golf tournament contested by teams from Europe and the United States. With each event, the venue alternates between courses in the US and Europe. The Ryder Cup is jointly administered by the PGA America and Ryder Cup Europe.

The Open Championship

Also referred to as the British Open, the Open Championship was founded in 1860 and is one of the world’s most prestigious and oldest golf competitions. It was originally held at the Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland but now rotates between a few select golf courses in the United Kingdom. The Open Championship is held in July and is the fourth and final major professional golf tournament — one of the big four alongside the Masters Tournament, the US Open and the PGA Championship.

US Masters

The US Masters is a massive golf tournament, organised by the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, United States. It was established in 1934, forming part of the four biggest golf competitions of the season. The field of players is smaller in comparison to other big championships since it is an invitational event. With that said, this competition is an official money event on the PGA Tour, the European Tour and the Japan Golf Tour.

Golf Betting Options

Now that you’ve gotten an idea of what golf events are out there, the next step is to check out your golf online betting options. You may come across sportsbooks that offer a different set of choices compared to others, but we’ll go through some of the bets you’ll most likely come by. Many of these bets are similar to those offered in other sports events, so they shouldn’t be hard to pick up.

To kick things off, newbie players generally go for the match winner bet. This wager is quite common across sportsbooks as it is fairly easy to place and can be quite entertaining — making it great not only for beginners but experienced players as well. A step up from the match winner is the tournament winner — similar but a whole lot riskier. As its name suggests, players are required to predict the winner of an entire tournament. The over/under wager is worth considering as well, if you’re testing out the betting waters.

If you’d like to kick things up a notch, you can get into wagers specific to golf, like the hole-in-one bet. Bets like this one are not the most common of wagers, so you may not come across them too often. Nationality bets, first-round leader bets and parlay bets are also pretty popular choices for punters looking to add a little bit of spice to their betting. Bear in mind that some bets are riskier than others, so it is always best to weigh the odds before you wager.

While participants can shoot pretty impressive birdies, it is always crucial to be mindful about how much you’re betting, as it can be easy to get lost in all the excitement. A good bankroll strategy is the best way to safeguard your funds and help you bet within your limits. A bankroll strategy is an essential element in sports betting — and we’re here to help. Our Responsible Gaming tools are always available if you ever need any additional assistance; you can set limits on deposits, wagers and session duration, or exclude entirely for a definite period.
